A touch of history past..
Rich in Kauai history, this Makalii Planation property was previously owned by the McBryde Sugar Plantation. The Eleele Sugar Mill was used to process the McBryde sugar cane into finished product. A short distance away sits the sister, Kekaha Sugar mill which boasts of the only train robbery on Kauai. Here's how the story goes: "Great Train Robbery of the Territory of Hawaii." In 1920 a bandit made off with $11,000 of the Mana payroll. Kaimiola Hali, a fisherman, was caught and spent four years in jail for the train robbery. After prison Hali eventually became a guard at Iolani Palace on Oahu. (as told by Keith Kersting). |
